What is Paleo?

So I have been evolving my diet into the Paleo Diet for the last few months, and I already have seen such a difference. I no longer need to worry about being pre-diabetic or stress about my blood pressure. But did you know that the paleo diet can change these things for you in as little as 10 days!!! There is more, it is better for your bone density and reversing (yes - reversing) osteoporosis in the long run. Your energy level increases as well as your cognitive function both increase. I could explain all the positive effects info to you, but I have found an amazing series of videos that does it for me in a really engaging way. Unfortunately Blogger will not let me embed the videos to you directly, so PLEASE click on the link below and watch the journey this news anchor goes on as she 'Goes Paleo'.

YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS VIDEO
Health Watch: What is the Paleo Diet?
(this video also has 5 other parts you can watch...the first one that pops up is pretty all encompassing. But do your own search - there is tons! of info online about paleo, and it's health benefits)

“We’re basically hunter and gatherers living in the 21st century with all this technology and our genes don’t know what to make of it,” said Mark Sisson, author of the book “Primal Blueprint.”

Some experts believe the ancient DNA that runs our bodies is designed to work best when fueled with real, unrefined, unprocessed food. While our modern diet may save us time, effort and money, they say it’s making us sick.

Dr. S. Boyd Eaton called them “the diseases of civilization” caused by the mismatch of our lifestyle and genes. “Heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, which is the most common form of diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis,” Eaton said.

UCSF endocrinologist Dr. Robert Lustig said today’s modern diet that’s packed with processed foods actually drives up insulin levels. He said that too much insulin is the real culprit: making us hungry, fat, and fatigued.
“You can eat all you want, whenever you want. From this big list of very tasty foods: Meat, fish, fowl, eggs, nuts, seeds, vegetables, a little bit of fruit, some chocolate, maybe a little red wine,” Sisson said. “You can eat all you want, whenever you want as long as you don’t eat from this list that contains sugars, trans fats, hydrogenated oils, seed oils, and you know, grains.”

It's ok to cheat sometimes and you will still see the health benefits, shoot for 80 - 90% paleo in your life, and don't stress when you're out with friends or at a party. This is a lifestyle, not a fad diet. But it can only work as a lifestyle if it will still work in your life, and it can. Try it for 30 days, I swear you will be amazed at how good you feel!

Travis' Orange Julius

My sweet Hubby makes the most amazing Orange Julius, no really - better than the ones you get at the mall. So with some coercion he has reluctantly given me the secret recipe and I of course have passed it along to you...you're welcome ;)

1 tray of Ice cubes
1 small OJ concentrate tube
1 cup Milk
1 cup Water
1 TBLs Vanilla
Love (yes, he actually said this)
optional..... scoop of protein power, frozen or fresh fruit, supplements etc.

So anytime we happen to have berries that need to be eaten, we usually toss some in. We have tried all kinds of combinations etc. and every one delights. I'm telling you with this base, you cannot go wrong.

Now for all of you paleo types...you could switch the mik for chilled almond milk and you will still love the results. Fresh Orange Juice works too, but truthfully the concentrate makes it so much richer.
This makes the best homemade popsicles, the kids have no idea I hide probiotics and protein powder inside ;)
